Key Survey Trends

Since 2002, the Remuneration and Benefits Survey for Professional Associations (RBSPA) has helped Associations and Institutes benchmark their pay and benefits.  Designed as a comprehensive management tool, the survey reports provide accurate labour market data for a wide range of positions.

The most recent survey report highlights some fascinating trends in pay and conditions over the past 18 months, some of which are summarised below: 

• Results show that pay has decreased in most of the participating organisations by between 4% and 11%. 
• On the surface this appears significantly more downbeat than trends in other PAYdata surveys. However, rather than cutting pay, many Professional Associations and Institutes appear to have reorganised and/or adjusted their headcount. This is revealed in the survey results by variations in pay movements by seniority. For example, some of the greatest year-on-year pay decreases have been at the more senior levels (Heads of and Senior Managers), between 3% and 6%. However, CEO, COO and Deputy CEO positions have shown year-on-year increases, along with many junior positions. Senior Support Staff in particular have shown some of the greatest pay increases.
• Functionally, Commercial and Membership Affairs have seen some of the largest pay decreases (up to 10%). Whilst HR, Professional Affairs and International Affairs have seen the highest increases (sometimes up to 5%).
• Geographically, pay across the UK varies by as much as 10% from region to region for non-senior roles. It is also common for organisations to pay a London Weighting, generally around £3,500 per year, although this is generally paid to non-junior positions.
